The description of both of the estates in the novel Wuthering Heights are huge symbols that play in the book. The description of Wuthering Heights being a more gloomy and depressing place compared to The Granges more bright and extravagant feel.
The description of both being complete opposites are due to the fact that they both are significant in meaning. Wuthering Heights has a more darker undertone and feel to represent the fact that it is an unsettling place that no one would like to visit.
Like in the book both The Heights and The Grange also resemble the two main characters in the novel, Edgar Linton and Heathcliff. Heathcliff is the eventual owner of The Heights so his description fits the Heights distinctively. As for Edgar Linton whom is the owner of The Grange. It resembles his honest and more proper depiction and his sweeter and kinder tone to his character.
This is actually the case with real life. It basically describes how people design and organize their house. If a person buys a house and they are trying to figure out how to decorate the house. If the person has children the house would have a significant different feel then someone who doesn't have children.
This is like comparing my teachers house to my house. My teacher Ms. Wilson, we visited her house for a drama production and her house has a much different feel and description then my house per say. Her house has a more themed feel which is easily seen because her house is filled with trinkets and everything about her house is about Paris France. There are Eiffel Towers everywhere. On blankets in paintings and she has many delicate Eiffel Tower sculptures used for decoration. She has no children and always wanted to travel to Paris. She loves that city. Her personality really shines through with how her space is decorated. It is evident she is a more artsy and tidy person because her house is organized and very neat. It also had a very pleasant smell.
My house on the other hand is designed to be more family oriented. Not because my mom is like that it's because she has four children. Leaving delicate sculptures on an end table are definitely not a smart idea. Due to the fact it is most likely going to be destroyed. My moms more organized and clean freak personality shines through with how many shelves and cupboards we have in our house. My mom likes organization so she has an Ikea brand organization cabinet.
Basically someones space or property is a mirrored reflection of their personality.
A better example is if you are a messy person. Your space will most likely be messy. If you are a more musical person. There will most likely be a musical instrument in your room. If you are a more organized person your space will most likely have some sort of organization system.
So both The Heights and The Grange are significant in the novel because it helps describe the true personalities and characteristics of both characters very well. It helps the reader more easily connect the characters to the significance of both properties.
Wuthering Heights' more grim and improper outlook are also significant to describe what they want the readers to feel when they think about the property and location. Thus Wuthering Heights has a darker undertone to mirror all the events that have unfolded within it's walls. All it's secrets. All the inhumane actions that have taken place as well as the deaths of many of the characters.
Thus both properties have significantly different descriptions and atmosphere from each other. The reason? It describes and mirrors the owners own intentions and personalities.
